Archive for January, 2011

Dear Perumale,

On this Republic Day, 26th of January 2011, adiyen owes a special thanks to our mother, India.

Dear Bharat Mata, dear daughter of Bhumi Devi, I am grateful to you for giving us a rich cultural heritage. Not one, but multiple cultures across multiple religious communities. No matter what spiritual path one chooses, you give us the unique position in the world to grow by leaps and bounds in awakening of the soul. Dear mother, you are the cradle of the human soul. Thank you for nurturing the mahaans, their writings and our resultant awakening. Thank you.

May this spiritual richness last forever, till mankind exists.

Adiyen Ramanuja Dasan.

There will always be a special place in my heart for you. Your 1,000th year celebration came to an end this 25th of January, 2011 (Thai Maasam, Hastham Nakshatram) as you turned 1,001. Even if adiyen were to tell you a 1,000 times as to how grateful I am to what I have learnt from you, it wouldn’t be enough. I would like to thank you for giving me  a totally new perception to the life we live, and I shall forever strive to be a true Sri Vaishnava by soul and spirit.

Kuresa, thank you so much.

Forever following your divine light.

Dear Perumale,

Sri Thirumazhisai Azhwar’s Thirunakshatram (Thai Masam, Magha Nakshatram) fell on the 22nd of January, 2011. I personally feel that the uniqueness of this Azhwar mainly lies in his spiritual journey – he wouldn’t accept things blindly but only on deeper study and understanding. While on one hand it is wrong to dismiss our scriptures without even educating ourselves about them, it is also wrong if we  just follow blind rituals without understanding their deeper significance.

Dear Perumale,

The Margazhi month drew to a close for the Vikruti Varsham marked by the wedding of the divine couple – ‘Andal Kalyanam’. A Goddess devoted to Lord Krishna from the time she was a child received the greatest gift of being united with the lord. This would be similar to the story adiyen had been fascinated with as a child – the story of Mirabai. Adiyen feels it takes a great deal of spiritual enlightenment to even think so much of the lord at a young age, when other children would be busy fighting for their toys. What blessings Andal would have received to compose devotional poetry, poetry of the excellence only experienced scholars could achieve.

Adiyen’s warmest wishes to Andal for the day she united with Sri Krishna, our Rangamannar.

This Saturday, the 1st of January, the world celebrated the dawn of another year as marked by the Gregorian calendar.

The 2nd of January, 2011 was an important date as well. Infact the beautiful day of Kettai under Margazhi, the birth nakshtram of Sri Thondaradipodi Azhwar. Isn’t it true that an average human being living his life in this samsara can relate to the life of this Azhwar? Sri Vipranarayana, as the Azhwar was called, had a life marked by the rise and fall of devotion followed by a resurrection in faith. It is an amazing story of how the Azhwar goes astray from the path of devotion, only to be rescued by the ever-loving, extremely generous Sriman Narayana.

To a large extent most of us trapped in this material world often get caught up so much in life’s happenings that we forget about the lord. Well, even if the lord is always on our mind, we are unable to think beyond our little karmic/samsaric worlds. Our daily tasks are important. But the higher purpose and the higher goal of self and God realisation must never be sidelined. The essence of Saranagathi is to carry out tasks in this world with complete faith in the lord, and never forgetting the real happiness of being with Sriman Narayana, amidst His devotees.

Dear Thondaradipodi Azhwar, adiyen prays to you…to give devotees the strength to never lose faith, to never stray, to never lose confidence in the lord or get distracted/worried by the travails of samsaric life. Dear Azhwar, I pray to you to help devotees rise above their material worries and experience endless happiness in God realisation and devoted focus.
