Sri Jayanthi 2011

Dear Perumale,

This year Sri Krishna’s birthday was marked on 3 different consecutive days in different parts of the country.

21st was Gokulashtami as observed by the Smarta tradition, the 8th day of the month of Avani.

22nd was Krishna Janmashtami throughout North India and a part of the Sri Vaishnava community as well. This is the day the famous Dahi Hundi breaking happens in Mumbai.

23rd was the janma nakshatram of the darling of the gopikas and celebrated as Sri Jayanthi by another part of the Sri Vaishnava community. Rohini is definitely one of the most special stars of all! 🙂

No matter which day was observed as Krishna’s birthday, adiyen hopes it was celebrated with great happiness and love for Krishna. I am reminded of a saying according to which whenever one does aradhana or offers any kind of prayers to the lord, it should be done with preethi (love) and not bheethi (fear). Adiyen has observed celebrations in various houses on different occasions where there is a lot of anxiety, stress and worry on how things are conducted. This amount of stress just negates any spiritual growth. Indeed one may offer patram (leaves), phalam (fruits), pushpam (flowers) or just thoyam (water), but when offered with true devotion and love Sri Krishna would readily accept it with utmost affection.

With these thoughts I pray lord, that all your devotees are awakened to the very purpose of pooja which is a celebration of devotion, best done with joy in the heart!

This Sri Jayanthi I hope Adiyen has done justice to Your birthday dear Keshava. Forgive me for any shortcomings. And I say this not out of fear, but with love. 🙂

Gajendra Moksham 2011

Dear Perumale,

Today marks an occurrence several years back, when a devotee in the form of an animal obtained the grace of the lord. The event is none other than Gajendra Moksham. Imagine, if Perumal would listen to even an elephant devotee, why can’t we as intelligent’ human being just give in to the sweet surrender… how long before we realise Him?!

Sriman Narayana - Gajendra Moksham

Oh Gajendra, you may have been an animal in pain but still remembered the lord…adiyen’s respects to you!

Dear Perumale,

I am writing to pay my respects to Sri Yamunacharya on his Thirunakshatram – Adi masam, Uttaradam nakshatram.

Sri Yamunacharya, also called ‘Aalavandaar’ – the one who has come to rule. What did he rule but indeed our hearts!

Sri Alavandaar…the one who had inspired Sri Ramanujar, and forms an important link in the Acharya Parampara.

Dear Perumale,

How is it that the most majestic and beautiful of creatures become part of the nitya suris, in devoted service under your leadership and care? So what if the mighty Garuda has the privilege and pleasure of carrying you by your divine feet rested on his wings…

End of the day, we have all come from you and would eventually have to go back to you, dear Narayana…

Dear Periya Thiruvadi, Sri Garuda… today You may be with the lord, but we shall all be with you in service some day! 🙂

My respects to you on your birthday! (Adi masam, Swathi nakshatram, August 6th – 2011).
